N-Gage team: Christie Spurling MBE

Christie Spurling MBE FRSA

Hello! I am Christie Spurling and I am Founder and CEO of Manchester based youth charity N-Gage. I am passionate about helping young people reach their full potential.

I was permanently excluded from secondary school and placed in a residential unit which led complete disengagement from education and many struggles in later life until I discovered an ability and passion for working with young people.

I qualified as a youth worker and have worked as a Team Leader in a residential unit for young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties, as a Behaviour Support Worker for the Local Education Authority, and also as a church-based youth worker. I then set up my charity N-Gage in 2006.

Outside of work I’m a petrol-head and keen drummer. I’m married to the lovely Jo and we have two amazing daughters.

I joined N-Gage in November 2015 as a Youth Inclusion Manager working primarily on a new project in North Manchester. Leading a team of up to 15 sessional workers we collectively work in the region of 300 children and young people each year. Over the past few years, I have taken up the role of Head of Community Engagement and Funding, whilst still delivering some face-to-face youth work in schools and our very popular holiday play schemes

Outside of N-Gage, I love spending time with my family and am a sports fanatic. I run 3 times a week and enter as many events as time allows, up to and including half marathon distance. One day I would love to take on the London Marathon.

I first started working with young people through teaching music and singing, and my love of supporting and helping young people developed from there. Alongside my BA (Hons) degree in Musical Theatre, I have a Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Early Learning, a Level 2 certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and I am consistently developing my knowledge and awareness through regular CPD training and courses. I have a wide range of experience working with young people from nursery age to teenagers in a variety of settings including schools and youth groups.

I am the Schools Programme Lead at N-Gage and I spend most of my time working in different schools throughout Manchester leading one-to-one mentoring sessions with students.

I first started working with young people in 2019, volunteering in the charity sector with a youth charity which supported teenagers from disadvantaged backgrounds. This is when I first saw the real impact that youth work had on young people and how important the positive outcomes were for those involved. I then went on to work in the care sector working in both semi-independent and residential homes for children. Working within these organisations gave me the opportunity to work with children and young people with very complex and diverse issues, allowing me to help understand their issues and further grow my passion for youth work. I am happy to be part of an organisation who wants to help support young people and those who are struggling the most. I am looking forward to see how I can positively support those young people within my role at N-gage.

I have worked within schools for 9 years supporting learners with various needs in an educational setting. This time has given me an understanding of how learning best happens and when a person isn’t in the right space they aren’t ready to learn. I was fortunate that in my previous post a lot of focus was put into the whole child which I hope is something I can continue to use as part of the N-Gage team. I am passionate about seeing the young people I support grow and bring out their best. For many years I volunteered with Girlguiding and hold my warrant for this organisation. This provided me with the opportunity to work with young people outside of education enabling me to see and nurture skills in them perhaps not recognised otherwise and to improve their self-esteem by completing new challenges and having adventures! A friend shared a post from N-Gage on their Facebook and I was intrigued to read more, the website for the charity had testimonies from schools which N-Gage had been into stating how much of a difference had been made by this charity and it was something I knew I wanted to be a part of. I am excited to be part of the team and look forward to making a difference to the young people I have the pleasure of working with.

I am delighted to become a team member at N-gage and work towards fulfilling young people’s full potential. I have achieved a First-class degree in Early years childhood studies and a master’s degree in education studies. My studies have developed my enthusiasm towards creating inclusive spaces for young people to allow them to reach their full potential. I have a wealth of knowledge regarding the development of individuals and how and why the education system is structured. After my studies I spent a year in a primary school building relationships with children with special educational needs and developed ways to best support them. I am excited to take on the role of youth worker lead in Trafford and look forward to working with my team to develop this exciting new project in Trafford. This new project at N-gage is a great opportunity to further our presence in Manchester and achieve our mission of helping young people reach their full potential in their community.

I am excited to join the office team at N-Gage and join a community of people dedicated to supporting and enriching the lives of young people. I was born in the Shropshire area, but moved to America as a child and completed the majority of my education there, earning a university degree in History, before returning to the UK. I look forward to supporting the team in an administrative role and helping to ensure a smooth running of operations.
